A Diverse and Inclusive Community

Founded in 1929 at the cusp of the Great Depression, the humble start of this Baptist church served God in a small basement with only few faithful neighbors and has grown into the community sanctuary it is today. Our church is filled with God's love for God's people.

Our Story

The New Light Baptist Church began as a small Sunday School class from the homes of Mrs. Lilian Valentine and Mrs. Emily Weathers in 1925. Several years later in 1929 this seed grew into the New Light Mission led by Reverend Junius W. Jefferson. This community of believers built their church with their own hands and in 1940, Rev. Jefferson marched his congregation into their newly completed church.  The church continued to grow under the stewardship of Reverend William E. Middleton, Reverend B.B. Felder, Reverend Jessie Jeffries, Reverend Mason Thomason, and Reverend John Douglas, but in 1968 Rev. William C. Hall was called to pastor the church and would do so for the next 40 years.

Under his stewardship the church grew exponentially, booming financially and upgrading its facilities, adding another building and a parking lot.  In 2008 Rev. Vernon C. Miller was installed as the 9th Pastor in over 80 years of the New Light Baptist Church. Pastor Miller envisions the Church continuing to move forward as a church that meets the spiritual and social needs of the community. With this vision in mind, Pastor Miller in 2010 established the New Light Community Development Corporation to provide for the needs of the community. The goal of the NLCDC is to create programs, such as, an afterschool program, day care, summer camp and eventually Community Center adjacent to the church.
