The Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools® program is a six-week summer literacy and cultural enrichment program designed to inspire a love of reading, foster positive attitudes toward learning, build self-esteem, and connect children and families to community resources.​

Bloomfield New Light CDC Freedom School is proud to offer this program to students who have completed grades 3 through 8.​

College students and recent graduates play a vital role in the CDF Freedom Schools® program as Servant Leader Interns. Each Servant Leader Intern serves as the primary teacher for up to 10 scholars and receives access to leadership development and networking opportunities that support continued service and advocacy for children and families.

Responsibilities

Create an engaging, supportive learning environment through energy, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude
-
Foster excitement for learning and encourage active scholar participation
-
Serve as a positive role model and maintain a professional demeanor
-
Supervise scholars and ensure their safety at all times
-
Set up, manage, and break down classroom spaces in accordance with CDF and sponsor guidelines
-
Facilitate the Integrated Reading Curriculum for up to 10 scholars per class
-
Attend all required Ella Baker Child Policy Training Institute sessions
-
Collaborate with site staff to ensure program components are implemented with fidelity
-
Report operational concerns to the Site Coordinator
Program Commitment & Schedule

Mandatory Orientation: May 2026 (date TBD)

Mandatory In-Person Training: June 2026 (Tennessee) All travel, lodging, and meals provided

Staff Planning & Prep: June 2026

Summer Program: June 29, 2026 – August 7, 2026

Commitment: Full 7-week program (40 hours/week)

Completion of at least one year of college in good academic standing

Strong ability to motivate others and work within an intergenerational team
